The Weeping Willow

The Weeping Willow is one of Monet's most famous paintings, but I didn't fully appreciate it until taking this class and learning about the aesthetic/formal qualities behind art. Monet painted this in response to the tragedy of World War I, but this is something you wouldn't be able to guess when you look at the art unless you read about the sociopolitical context that he created this art in. The direction of the brushstrokes represent mourning, but there is still so much color it's hard to see that it represents mourning, but maybe Monet included a lot of color to represent the complexity of war.
