Balenciaga and Appropriation
Coincidentally, following our discussion in class today, an article was released just yesterday about the fashion brand Balenciaga and some of its recent controversies. This article actual makes direct references to the Dada movement and the work of conceptual artist Marcel Duchamp when trying to understand the $2,145 replica of IKEA's blue bag. It was interesting to learn that Demna Gvasalia (creative designer of Balenciaga) actually draws direct inspiration from Duchamp's elevation of everyday objects when designing for this brand. I thought this article was a good example of the influence of the Dada movement on other creative outlets, such as fashion.
